A former Federal Penitentiary, Alcatraz Island has been open to visitors since it was eventually shut down. Now a public museum, visitors can tour the island and prison. Guided tours include the cells of famous inmates like Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly and the Birdman of Alcatraz, the dining hall & Kitchen, the warden’s office and more. This popular attraction attracts over 1.5 million visitors annually.
